Five movie audition mistakes and how to avoid them

In nollywood or any other film industry in the world for that matter, auditions are the best ways for new and upcoming actors to get their talents recognized. But just like everyone other business, new comers are marginalized by their own ignorance. Many actors blow their opportunity to get picked up by directors for a new role by making very silly little mistakes. Here are five of the most common audition mistakes actors make and how to avoid them.

POOR APPEARANCE
In getting a role, it is a fact that the way you appear is important in helping you get the role you want. Many actors treat auditions like something they are doing ‘just’ for a trial. The truth is auditions are like job interviews. And just like job interviews your looks, appearance and presentation has a massive impact in the minds of producers and directors. You don’t necessary have to look like you’re going to an award night, or like it’s your wedding day. Just look neat, professional and attractive. Everyone wants to associate themselves with success and the way you look definitely creates the initial impression.

NEGATIVE ATTITUDE
During auditions actors, especially the new ones, are used to displaying all their characteristics freely in the open. You see them complaining about other people’s lateness, the errors in the script, the audition venues and everything they can lay their eyes on. What they don’t know however is that the person sitting next to them or passing by might be a crew member or even the director. This is why when you go to auditions be careful what comes out of your mouth. Always put on a positive vibe and attitude that will impress the people around so that they get to like you.

OBVIOUS IGNORANCE
Too much ignorance can keep you in the low end for a long time, if not completely destroy your acting ambitions. As an actor, you are supposed to know everything, or as many things as possible. If you want to succeed as an actor then you need to do a lot of reading. Read everything from newspapers, to magazines and even the bible. This is because the directors can ask you any questions during the audition, casual or otherwise. If they ask you, what they think is a simple question, and you have no idea, you are not impressing them. You should know basic things and be up-to-date. Not only facebook and whatsapp.

POOR PERFORMANCE
Apart from your appearance, your performance is another very important aspect that can help or damage your chances at auditions. Directors or casting directors are going to ask you to do so many things including but not limited to readings, recitations, acting, and monologues e.t.c. Your reading must be smooth and audible, your monologue must be impressing, your acting must be convincing and your energy must be felt. If you cannot do this then sorry, no roles for you. This is why you must practice over and over again on your own, before coming to the audition venue. You must get information and tips from online and other sources to help you do better.

NOT FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS
Every audition have their own instructions e.g come with 5x7 photo; your photo must not be photoshoped; you must arrive by 9am; come with a friend; no one should leave until 4pm e.t.c. You must follow any instructions provided along with the audition notice. If you go against any of these instructions you’re only telling the producers and directors that when they give you instructions on set you will disobey. No one likes disobedient actors on set. No one.
