How nollywood actors can use social media to improve their careers

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, so much that we cannot imagine living without it. Businesses, individuals, companies and even the government are using the medium to sell ideas, promote their products and services and interact with consumers, first hand. As a nollywood actor, you too have the chance to make use of this great tool to improve your talent and your career.

MAKE FILM FRIENDS
As an actor, you want to send friend request to directors, producers, production managers and other people you have meet on set. Doing this will give you the opportunity to monitor their activities and know what is ‘going on’. Some of them might decide to post audition notice on their timeline of which may not be available anywhere else.

INTERACT WITH YOUR FILM FRIENDS
If you understand the law of communication you will know that it is easier for you to get a role in a movie, connecting directly with the director or producer, than going to an audition. This is why you must try chatting with your movie friends once in a while. Don’t go straight into discussing about an opportunity they may have for you, rather, start with greeting them and asking about their life, family and work. Discuss how you feel about one of their movies of which you have seen and suggest how they can improve on it. But do this in a subtle tone. Avoid chatting with them every other day; they will ignore you and you will lose their friendship.

JOIN GROUPS AND PAGES
There are countless groups and pages, on facebook, especially those ones that provide information about auditions, acting tips and connections for actors. Join these groups and pages and always make comments on issues that means a lot to you.

PROMOTE YOURSELF
One of the good things about social media is that it gives everyone equal chance to promote themselves. As an actor, you never can tell who is looking, watching or listening. This is why you should organize your social media home pages in a way that it makes you look appealing. Have a solid Facebook homepage with well taken studio pictures and images. Create an album where you will post pictures taken on set and auditions, and let people know about the films you have taken part in by uploading the posters. If you have a phone with a solid camera, you can also make a video profile introducing yourself and profession to the world. Get rid of all those ugly pictures and images and replace them with good pictures that shows you are serious with your work.

GET SUPPORT FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS
It will do you a lot of good if you promote a movie you featured in – no matter how small the role may be. Promoting your film on social media will help you get support from your family and friends, which is so much needed as you venture into your career. Nollywood gives opportunity to all, but it is those who take it by the horn that reach the Promised Land.
