Four other things you can do on set apart from acting

It’s a good thing that you want to be focused on your nollywood acting career. But that doesn’t mean you cannot do any other thing. In fact, as a new comer into the industry, the more you engage yourself with many other things the better. This is why it is advisable for you to learn one or two other things apart from acting, so that your opportunity of even getting regular acting roles can be guaranteed. And more importantly, you might get paid. Here are four things you can do on set.

Location manager
To make a movie, filmmakers need to acquire locations e.g. buildings, apartments, shops, stores and so on; depending on the dictates of the script. Most times, professional location mangers usually provide this type of service. But it’s something you can do as an actor since all you need is to have contact to a number of people who have properties they are ready to lease for film production. Location managers get paid a lot of money of which can help sustain your career. Also, you have a better chance to get a role since you’ll be working directly with the main crew. Check the credits of some old nollywood films, you will find out that super stars like Genevieve Nnaji were location managers too. Seriously, no joke!

Production assistant
The job of a production assistant is to ensure the smooth running of a film production. They are responsible for moving equipment, running errands for super star nollywood actors and top crew members, setting up filming equipment, and so many other things. If you know any producers who is going on set, you should ask them to hire you as one of their production assistants. Often times actors cast in movie roles will not show up for shooting for different reasons, and if there are no substitutes, you may get your opportunity to act. The difference, however, between a location manager and production assistant is that, while the former doesn’t involve actually getting busy on set, the later does. And production assistant job can be a bit physically tasking, so it is more likely suitable for the guys.

Make-up artist
When you watch movies you notice that the actors have fine, fresh and attractive look. It doesn’t come by accident, it is the deliberate handwork of make-up artists. However, unlike production assistants or location managers, you’ll need to do a little learning so you can do good make-up – that is if you originally never tried it before. Being a make-up artist on set gives you the opportunity to move closer and interact with movie stars. You should relate with them; telling them about your acting ambitions and how you’re just doing this (make-up) to get yourself involved in the industry. Let them know that you’re looking for acting opportunities. If incase there is an opening in that location or any location you meet with them, they can recommend you to directors for a trial.

Costume designer
Most of the cloths actors wear in movies don’t actually belong to them - they are provided by costume designers or what is popular known as ‘costumier’ in nollywood. You can go into this if you can go in partnership with someone that owns a boutique or you can buy your own cloths. As the costumier you also have close access to top stars just like the make-up artists, so it’s a great chance to relate with them. Both costumier and make-up artist are not too physically tasking so they are suitable for both the ladies and the guys.
