The importance of humility to your acting career

In the business world, humility is one of the most important elements you require, to becoming a successful person. This can also be relateable to the nollywood film industry. As a fresh nollywood recruit, you will realize that most of the people who have been there before you always demand for some respect. Giving them this respect without asking makes you a humble person, and will make you become a star very quickly.

IT MAKES YOU OPEN
Being humble makes you very open to interact with other actors more freely. The more people you know, they better you learn and the more you get favors. The lack of humility has destroyed the careers of actors, both new and upcoming. Becoming a star is not the problem, the real problem is remaining at the top of that ladder. And the only thing that can make you remain there is continuous humility and respect for everyone.

IT MAKES YOU LIKEABLE
People want to associate with the person that is humble and homely. Whether you’re on set, at the audition ground or just chilling about industry people, humility attracts you to a lot of people. Directors like actors that are creative and add value to their picture, but they will love you even more if you just do what they tell you to do. They know when you come up with a great idea and when you’re just being arrogant.

IT GIVES YOU A FAST EDGE
Have you ever wondered why some people start there nollywood acting career yesterday and within a few months they are already making waves. Their secret is far beyond exceptional talent; they are humble people. Ask anyone in the movie industry, and they will tell you producers and directors will rather work with a less creative but humble person, than a ‘brad pitt or Genevieve nnaji’ with too much ego.

PEOPLE WILL HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOU
One of the greatest challenges that nollywood film directors and producers have is managing actors; male and female, young or old, new or experienced. Equipment, location and weather may easily be managed, but people are not. This is why if you are humble, directors will like to work with you all the time because they know that you will never give them problems on set. They have confidence that once they tell you to do or not to do something, you will obey and not argue.

PEOPLE WILL BE READY TO TEACH YOU
Apart from learning online, getting tips and tricks of the acting trade from directors, producer, more experienced actors and other film crew members is a good way to improve your acting talents. But they will only accept to do this if you’re humble enough to ask and humble enough to ‘bring yourself down’ and learn.

Being humble is great, but that doesn’t mean you should be an idiot taking everything that it thrown on your face. In fact, some people will hate you for being a humble person because they hate the fact that you’re better than them. Move closer to people that respect you and far away from those who despise you.
