Becoming a recognized actor in nollywood is not a day job.
The environment is tensed and competitive and only the fittest can and may
survive. But that doesn’t mean you can’t make it. In fact, it is easier to make
it in the Nigerian film industry than any other film industry in the world. But
in order to achieve any meaning success you need to have cool movie acting
skills. But many people don’t have the financial resources to attend a film or
acting school. If you are one of those, here are four alternative ways for you
to boost your acting skills.
ONLINE
There many sources of online articles, essays and videos that
provide top class lessons in acting methodologies that you can really benefit
from. And the best part of this is that they are mostly free of charge. But
most upcoming and even many established actors focus more on getting work,
auditions and acting roles instead of improving their skills. You can find
articles and videos on acting, script interpretation, dialogue and blocking on
so many blogs and websites, like this blog, and YouTube for example.
DRAMA GROUP
Many of the best actors we have in the world today started
out in local, church and school drama groups. The advantage of belonging to a
drama group cannot be overemphasized. One thing about acting is that you need a
lot of room to make mistakes, and it is a good thing that you make them often.
But the only exception to this rule is to make sure that you learn from each
mistake you make and never go back to your vomit. The last place you want to
make mistakes is on the set of a very important movie for which you have been
cast. So, drama group help groom you and prepare you for greater challenge in
the market place.
WATCH
MOVIES
A reporter once ask one of the greatest movie directors in
the history of filmmaking “what is the best way to learn how to make movies”
the director replied “watch movies”. But there are two ways to watch a movie; for
entertainment and for knowledge. As an actor trying to break into nollywood,
you need to start watching movie is order to gain knowledge of acting skills. Look
for the movies of an actor you love and study how they carry their lines, make
gesticulations and relate with the camera. Getting the script for the movie
you’re watching and reading while you watch is another great way to focus on learning
from great actors.
TALK ABOUT
IT
When we were in secondary school, one of the best ways to
master a new topic is to talk about it with others. The same method can also be
applied with acting. Obviously, in order to do this, you will need to relate
with people in nollywood that are of like minds. Watch a movie together and
after, discuss the acting, the highs, the lows and the unexpected. Argue
constructively and learn from other people’s perspectives. This is one of the
main reasons why acting schools work
.
It is not a simple task to become a Hollywood "A" list actor. The route to an Oscar is a pretty tedious and a tough one. It is always better to aim for the sky knowing fully well you may land on the roof. Aim to become a successful working actor who is able to bring the character to life effortlessly and you will soon find that your performance is beginning to get noticed and talked about.
