Have you ever wondered why many people get selected and you
don’t, for many nollywood auditions? The answer is obvious, you didn’t create
enough impression. Directors are always looking out for new talents and
exceptional creativity that will bring their story to life. But if you cannot
deliver that impression during auditions, someone else will and you will not be
getting the role. If you want to get a movie role in the next audition, then
you must be ready to do something that the director will not forget in a hurry.
Here are some audition tips to help you create a lasting impression.
UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE ASKED TO DO
Every director or audition has its own specifics. Your
initial priority as an actor, once you get to the audition ground, is to
understand what exactly the specifics are. Will you be required to do a reading
alone, or with other actors? Will be asked to improvise and act a scene of your
choice? Will you be given a script or asked to do a monologue? Understanding
what is required of you is the first and most important thing.
BE CONFIDENT
Most people sissy when they get in front of the director
during an audition; this is not good for you at all. You are only sending out
the wrong message to the director that you’re incapable. Be confident and bold
and don’t stammer. Stand upright and smile. Answer every question politely and
accurately to best of your knowledge and ask questions if you don’t understand
anything. But don’t ask too much questions because it will mean that you have
very slow understanding.
DON’T DENY YOUR WEAKNESS
This may sound a little misleading but it is a fact that many
people do not realize. Everyone has a weakness, no one is perfect. In fact,
employers are always interested in knowing the weaknesses of their employees in
order to know how to manage them better. If you have a weakness the director
will know and all he wants to understand is that you will be ready to learn.
Covering and denying your weakness can mean that you consider yourself as
perfect and we all know such things only exist in the movies!
SPEAK OUT LOUD
Often times, directors will remember you because they have
your voice in their heads. But too many times actors are hard to hear during
auditions. When you are asked to do anything make sure you can be heard clearly
by the director. You don’t need to shout – that may turn people off – but make
sure you are audible. The best way to master this is to practice auditioning on
your own, in front of a standing mirror, before getting to the audition venue.
DO SOMETHING FAMILIAR
Very few directors will ask you to do a monologue during an
audition. But it is always good that you have mastered at least three
monologues before going to any auditions. To create an impression, why not pick
a monologue from a very popular movie and deliver it when asked to. You can be
sure that no one will be thinking of that.
