auditioning in progress |
For a nollywood actor, there
is nothing more fulfilling than getting a role in a very promising movie. Or
any movie for that matter. You go home, tell all your friends and family
members to watch out! You go straight to yaba,
hunting for the latest shirts and shoes in town. You are ready to hit the big
screen. Hey wake up dreamer, you haven’t passed the audition yet. There are so many reasons why nollywood actors fail to pass an audition and get a chance of
being selected for a movie role. If you are one of those people, today is your
lucky day. Here are a few tips to help you get a top role in the next audition.
Be punctual
One of the greatest mistakes
you can make as an upcoming actor is to start seeing yourself as a star. So you
think you can get to the audition venue at any time. Get the facts right; you
are a hustler and you need exposure. The best way to prove to anyone that
you’re serious is to make it in-time to the audition venue. If the audition
time says 8am, get there by 7am. Also, put into consideration the distance
between where you are coming from and the audition venue. If for example you
live in lekki and the audition is at Iyana-ipaja, you know you have to wake up
at least by 4:30 am, in case there is traffic. Producers like actors that are punctual
because they believe if they pick you, you will be punctual on set and safe them
a lot of money.
Dress appropriately
Hey, it’s a movie audition
not a night party or the gathering of the saints. The idea here is that you
don’t want to appear looking like you work at ‘allen avenue’ or like you are
the head of the choir at ‘deeper life’. Look good, clean and attractive. And wear nice shoes. This also goes for the
men. You can dress casual or corporate (but not like my bank manager o), and
look good. Producers and directors want people that will help sell their
picture so you have to prove to them you’re up to the task.
Prepare
Most upcoming actors get
this all wrong. You don’t just show up at an audition without first planning
it. If the audition is in 48 hours try to do some rehearsals alone or with
friends.
Do you have monologue?
A monologue is a long speech
by an actor in a play or film without any interruption. As an upcoming actor,
one of the ways you can prove your worth is to have at least three different
monologues you have masters. If you want to be super cool, try memorizing
monologues from popular movies and see how much you will impress the director
at the audition. But, only deliver monologues when the director or casting
director ask you to do so.
Contact information
In most cases the casting
team will need you to provide your contact information in order to get back to
you in case they favor you. Make sure you don’t give them a ‘dead’ phone line
or an email address of which you don’t know the password anymore. Often times,
many actors fall into this error and end up blowing a golden opportunity to
kickstart their acting career. Always have your phone on and call back if you
see a strange number at that period. You need this thing more than they do.
These are very helpful tips. God bless Mr. Lekan. I need more of auditioning tips.
